According to the site, "The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has provided carrier safety data to industry and the public for many years via telephone requests. The Safety and Fitness Electronic Records (SAFER) System now makes it possible to offer this information electronically. Limited SAFER functions are now provided free of charge over the Internet. Access is provided to Carrier Snapshots, a concise electronic record of a carrier’s identification, size, commodity information, and safety record, including the safety rating (if any), a roadside out-of-service inspection summary, and crash information."

Learn to protect yourself from vehicle theft. Download lots of free articles on vehicle safety. Also, order the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) Passenger Vehicle Identification Manual (2003). According to the site, "Published annually, this manual contains vehicle identification number (VIN) structure and decoding from the last three model years for most U.S. and Canadian passenger vehicles, including light duty trucks and motorcycles." Get a free copy if you are an NICB member or in law enforcement. General public may get a copy of the book for ten dollars.
